Budget MTB for touring

My brother's going to do a bike tour in India this autumn, approx 2500km, after coming over here from Canada. He's looking for a budget hardtail mountain bike (cheap enough to do the job and leave behind at the end of the trip) that he can pick up here and take out with him after the summer. Is there such a beast? I know strictly nowt about MTBs or suspension and stuff, but if anyone has a workhorse skulking in their bike stable that might fit him - about 5'8'' - or can recommend where to start, I'd be very grateful.

I've got a tatty but rather good CB Cape Wrath. Deore 9speed group with Disc brakes and Truvativ crankset. Quite a few new bits 'n pieces. Don't know if it fits the bill but only want £130 posted.
