I know compared to the efforts of most of the forum this is going to seem piddly but i've just cycled 10 and a half miles... on a Saturday in freezing cold weather.... just because I wanted to. for me, this is a real milestone as less than a year ago I was 20st7lb with no interest at all in exercise.

I'm really starting to enjoy this cycling lark, especially as after my first week commuting I managed to lose 5lb in weight taking me to 16st2lb.

Well done! Milleage is all relative to what you're used to so don't think what you did took less effort than someone else doing 30 or 40. Getting out and about in this weather takes some real motivation so well done!!

Make sure the weight doesn't come off to fast though.

Thanks Matt - the weight loss is 2lb a week on average - so pretty sensible. I don't want to lose it too quickly because then once I get to goal i'll pile it back on just as quick. I've only been back in the saddle for a couple of weeks.

Well done that man !
Take it easy in the cold weather and build up the miles gently (10% increase per week is often recommended - but once you get the bug it's hard to keep down to that).... you will be astonished at how soon you start thinking of 20 miles as a "short" ride.

Well done mate - 10 miles is not a short distance for a newbie and "wanting" to do it in this cold - brilliant.
Wait til the spring/summer when you find out that setting off on a 50/60 miler at half six on a beautiful sunny morning is far better than a lie in - AND YOU WILL, BELIEVE ME.

I can't wait for that either  I've only been on the bike since October so not really ever seen any nice light mornings or any proper sunshine!

Sounds wimpy, buy flying along a coastal route with the wind at your rear and the sun glinting off the sea - beautiful mate - warms the soul.
Noticed you are from Poole - gotta be some brilliant coastals there.

Fantastic.

Hopefully you can look back at this thread in time to come and think "once upon a time I used to think 10 miles was a long way".

I'm REALLY lucky to live where I do  not only are there amazing places to ride, but they're all linked up by cycle ways
