why not get a wireless doorbell that plugs into the mains?

I have one of those, a Uni-Com jobby from Wilkos. It stops working after an unspecified amount of time, usually when you are waiting for something important to arrive. Unplugging/replugging sorts it. Annoying though.

Personally I dont think you can beat a few a good pair of knockers is hard to beat in my book

Why not be unsociable like me, and not answer the door so there's no need to have a bell unless its someone expected then I'll answer, same go's for the phone too.

We do this too. We get a lot of door to door salespeople, which I find intrusive not to mention annoying as they often call at inconvenient times (my wife works shifts so they often break her sleep pattern too). Although we have a sign on our door telling them to sling their hook the ***kers often ignore it. When the sign is pointed out to them they claim "Sorry, I didn't see it. Anyway, now you're here..." before carrying on with their spiel.

Having complained, half the time the companies claim to care but it makes very little difference. The other half the time they claim they weren't "selling" anything but just making us aware of a new service, which we can conveniently sign up for and pay at the door! Bunch of utter ****.

Ours works fine, a point that seems to be completely lost on my mother in law who just lets herself in with the spare key we gave her in case we ever got locked out.

a friend of mine sorted that out quite by accident, MIL had let herself in and got as far as the 2nd floor before anyone realised "make yourself a cup of tea, we'll be down in a min" was shouted through the bedroom door.
