If it's your bike that is parked outside Maplins right now, then there is a large crowd of people standing around watching it melt and burn before their eyes.

Vinoly, quoted in The Guardian:

"I knew this was going to happen [...] But there was a lack of tools or software that could be used to analyse the problem accurately."

This sentence tells you quite a lot about what's currently wrong not just with architecture but with a whole swathe of design professions.

I note on his Wikipedia page, he says that "Architecture is a dialogue with the forces of life" - well, I guess trying to fight the sun could come under this heading...

Also from the same article..

Also, another priceless statement was that he didn't realise it was going to get so hot, maybe 36 degrees but not 72 degrees. Presumably the incident where his hotel set the guests' hair on fire wasn't dramatic enough to stick in the mind when looking at the design of the latest building and err on the side of caution.

Apparently it takes 7 years to train to be an architect. I would propose that they should slightly amend the curriculum to include a module on "how not to design buildings that set sh!t on fire. Or if you do, how not to do it twice".
