Hi,
I currently ride a Jamis Ventura with Shimano RS21 wheels, I do really well with her, I ride long distant, average about 20mph around Essex and Surrey, I particularly like the area around box hill. I have done a couple of 100 mile sportives, and tbh I feel a little beat up afterwards and I am training towards London to Paris, so a carbon bike is strictly on my mind.

The bikes I have been looking at are Trek Domane, Specialized Roubaix and Scott Solace. My budget is like £2000-max £2500.

What I have been looking at are really good frames from previous years. I can get a Specialized S-Works Roubaix 2012 frame and fork for £1300, Shimano 5800 105 groupset for £330, a Euston alloy stem and bars for £80 and I'll just use my RS21's and seat off my other bike for now, my local bike shop quoted £50 to build need £30 spacers for the BB and £40 for bar tape.. Grand total £1830 for a frame that sold for £2600.. Seems alot better than what I can get for £2000 for a ready built bike even last years models..

What you guys think, and any other suggestions?

£40 for bar tape !?
£30 for spacers?
£50 to assemble it!?
All far too much.

The 5800 gropset should be back down to £300 shortly, I bought one 2 weeks ago for that from Ribble.

Even the best lizardskin tape is under £30
Don't forget the headset, a decent bottom bracket, cables if not included, seatpost

£50 to put a bike together - a lot - no, sounds dirt cheap if a shop rather than a mate

Yeah I'm going with lizardskin and yes overestimated only £25. The BB is Ultegra and cables come inc with the groupset. Seatpost and headset comes with the frame. Yeah I thought £50 was decent as the bike shop is one of the best in essex. Everywhere said £30 for spacers tbh so not moaning!

Cheers

Not here offten enough to argue
There obviously looking at using carbon spacers rather than plastic ones

I think thats a pretty good plan, but i would spend a little extra and go for ultegra 11 speed

Keep us updated on what you do

105 is 11 speed... Build your own! Ive done two and it works out so mich cheaper and you can choose exactly what you want, youve way over estimated some prices there so shop around and it will be even cheaper. You can get a decent. Deda bar and stem for under £30

You can also use cassette spacers on the crank spindle instead of using the silly spacers, remember the s works uses its own bottom bracket so shimano bottom brackets arent a direct fit, you need a pf30 to bsa adaptor then need to add a few mm with the spacers pm me if you need a hand ive just finished my s works tarmac and did a venge not too long agk

Thanks for the replies guys, sorry really bad description on my behalf.. when I stated spacers for BB, I meant the BB30 to hollowtech adapter, my mistake. I was going to build it myself and I am pretty much choosing everything myself, but considering the tools and setup I will need, I would rather just get them to build it.

I like the 105 gearset my mates Madone is 105 and I find it really decent, so I don't mind 'only' having 105 and seeing as it is 11 speed, its easily upgradable. The only prices the bike shop have quoted is for the BB adapter (£30) and to fully build it (£50). The other prices I'm going by wiggle and chainreaction etc. Would anyone really insist on having a carbon stem and handlebars? I would only bother if it translated in more ride comfort, than actually losing weight as the Euston EA90 stem and EA70 bars are pretty darn light!

Has the bike shop built an s works before? And know certain spacers are needed for the bottom bracket, its also pf30 not bb30, carbon bars and stem arent a big deal alot of the pro's dont bother with them

The owner of the shop owns one himself, but they are mainly a Trek dealer, I appreciate your help I've had a look at the Deda bars and stems I like the look of the Zero100 range which is cheaper, so might go for them. I got a stroke of luck as the frame has further been reduced so literately ordering soon as I get paid!! So the frame comes with a PF30 BB and also the groupset comes with a BB, does the adapter work withthe specialized BB or the Shimano one, only thing I'm a tad confused with.

WOW a Specialized concept store wanted £200 to build it!! but curiously only charge £95 for a full service, which should be more man hours... crazy pricing!!

Hey I had zero 100 stuff, the bars especially were crap. Flexed more than the £20 Deda ones I use at the moment! 3T Ergonova bars are my fav. FSA Omega are ok and cheap too.
