Bulge in tyre?

Hi all.

Got a bulge in my rear tyre, it is on the outside of the tyre (where it makes contact with the road) not near the rim. Could a weak rim have caused this or is it more likely to be damaged tyre cord? Hoping a new tyre is all that's needed and not a whole new wheel.

It's a MTB with urban style tyres. The tyre has done around 1800 miles but has not been removed recently, god knows how many miles the wheel has done as the bike was bought second hand (though I can see no visible damage to the rim).

OK thanks, unlikely to be a wheel rim problem then?

Got three different tyres on a click and collect for tomorrow so I can have a good look at them, should be back on the road soon.

Don't worry haven't ridden on it since.

Picked up and fitted a new tyre today, the old one was rotten inside and the cords had split. Just got back from a quick 14km blast and all seems fine, ready for the commute in the morning.

Thanks all who offered advice.
