Burghal Hidage rediscovered - a themed tour?

I've just finished reading Bernard Cornwell's Last Kingdom series, and this got me thinking about Sussex, and Wessex. This led me to rediscover the Burghal Hidage, a list of the burhs set up by Alfred the Great and Edward the Elder (more properly Edward I - but that nice Mr Gove at al insist all the numbering got reset by those spiffing Normans) to defeat my ancestors the Danes/Norse.

Starting at Rye and ending in Southwark it has the potential to make for an interesting credit card tour of southern England over a couple of weeks once my contract comes to an end in the autumn.

Mixed themes... never a single one though

My tours are usually aimed at getting from one point to another. It may be that we have a family event, a conference or simply part of my "Tour of Britain'

Sometimes the ride itself involves a themed route such as the Hadrian's Wall, or part may cover another route like the Viking Way

Apart from that I then deviate for historical churches, ancient sites, worthwhile pubs or villages, film or TV locations, local features

I left my heart in Papworth General

My first ever paid NHS job was as a Theatre Porter at Papworth General in 1976

Used to cycle from St Ives to Papworth along much quieter roads than they are now

Cornwell is very addictive, isn't he? Have you read the Grail Quest series? That would make a fantastic Continental tour.

If you like Cornwell, have you read any of CJ Sansom's Shardlake series? Well worth reading.

Just started, as in downloaded to my Kindle, the first Grail Quest. But I've got a couple Scandi-whatever-the-opposite-of-noir-is comedy reads to enjoy before I start on them. I hope they are not quite as repetitive as Last Kingdom though.

Shardlake? Love it. Read 'em all.

EDIT: PS I already have an Agincourt & Henry V King of France themed French tour planned on paper. London, Southampton, Harfleur, Agincourt, Rouen et cetera.

Rouen Cathedral is one of my faves...

It's a beautiful city well worth a days exploration if it's on a tour route. The Gothic quarter is lovely.
