Business Cycle Mileage Allowance

Do any of your workplaces offer a business cycle mileage allowance?

Our HR has categorically refused to allow such an allowance. Yet we have a fleet of expensive company cars, free car parking and the London Congestion Charge paid for out of users' expenses. They won't even consider the Bike to Work Scheme.

Not sure about an "allowance" but we can claim business miles. It's 40p a mile for driving and 20p a mile for cycling. Unfortunately, there's not much call for business miles that aren't intercity - i.e. from Malvern to other sites in London, the south coast or M3/M4 corridor. Thats all way too far for my cycling abilities. So I've no idea if anyone here actually ever claims bike miles.

I get 20p a mile. I occasionally claim for the travel fromYork-ish to York for meetings.

We get 40p per mile and I estimate that I have done 150 + work miles this month - what ever it turns out to be it will be my biggest work mileage claim yet.

Isn't the maximum rate 20p per mile with any excess being taxable in the hands of the recipient? i.e. it's a P11d benefit. Maximum £3,500 fine on the employer for each individual where no P11d or incorrect P11d filed.

Well as the argument goes, it shouldn't cost more than 20p a mile to run a bike so the excess is taxable remuneration. Otherwise we could have bicycle mileage rates of £1.00 a mile or more and reduce people's pay to compensate. It's no different for car mileage rates as well, I think.

I would like to be proved wrong though. I'm more or less guessing this is the case.

That's a great idea! Instead of giving a petrol allowance as they would if you were in a car, they should give a food allowance ... vouchers for Tesco's. That would have an added bonus because most food is tax free.

Anything over the 20p a mile is taxable.

Used to get 17p per mile, until I got my CTW bike, now it's nothing, as the bike isn't strictly mine.

The fuel is provided by you though and you have to pay for any punctures etc.

How cool would that be
Imagine cruising into their office and asking if they have showers, as you've just cycled 150 miles to get there.

I noticed when I was browsing my MPs expenses that they get 20p a mile for cycling

I know, I'm an accountant, and I've mentioned this to my colleagues...didn't wash...nor servicing costs etc....so they (the company) actually save money as I do about 50 miles a week business travel (if you include the from home to another site which isn't your permanent work place).......

Ah well, got a new bike out of it.
