Oh dear. I've started a couple of businesses doing things that I already understood, and that was bad enough. Distilleries are heavily regulated, the investment in premises and equipment is huge, you have to wait at least three years to sell any product, the market is crowded, some parts of it savagely discounted and whisky below a minimum standard is simply unsellable - it wouldn't be my first choice for a new business. If you don't involve someone who understands the trade, you have a good chance of losing everything you possess.A distillery!

Apparently there is a very good chapter in the Malt Whisky Handbook 2009.
