Can anyone recommend me books or other resources for someone looking to set up a small bussiness and who has very little experience?

Help would be much appreciated!

cheers

If you haven't already done so, Business Links is a pretty good place to start.

It's a huge area - the above link will get you started.

Then I'd go to a business forum and ask some questions - they won't mind.

The UK Business Forum is the busiest but there is also A1 Business Forums (here) which is a bit more cosy (apart from one of the Admin team!) -don't tell them I sent you!

Your bank will have a guide to setting up a business.... mine ran a 'setting up in business' course after hours one day a week at Newcastle Polytechnic which was a great way to get practical help setting up from the outset. I set up using Nat West and have been with them for the last 15 years. Your bank will also give you advice about writing your first business plan which you'd need to set up a business account [should get free banking for at least a year, though Co-operative Business Banking is free if you access it through The Small Business Federation [probably worth you joining].
Speak to the Carbon Trust as well about their 3 year interest free loan....

A distillery!
Oh dear. I've started a couple of businesses doing things that I already understood, and that was bad enough. Distilleries are heavily regulated, the investment in premises and equipment is huge, you have to wait at least three years to sell any product, the market is crowded, some parts of it savagely discounted and whisky below a minimum standard is simply unsellable - it wouldn't be my first choice for a new business. If you don't involve someone who understands the trade, you have a good chance of losing everything you possess.

Apparently there is a very good chapter in the Malt Whisky Handbook 2009.

Sambu may know all that already ASC, he's only asking for business advice, not how to set up a distillery! Now, had it been a brewery, that may have been been different...

Well ive got a degree in brewing & distilling so i do kind of undertand it. the investment in equipment doesnt have to be huge and you only have to wait 3 years to sell scotch whisky, not gin, vodka, or english whisky. plus i dont posses anything so i cant lose it lol. im only in the reasearch stage atm and im jsut trying to get my head round it.

im appreciating all the help btw
