In Dutch cities you have a much broader cross-section of society cycling (many more women, the middle-aged and older cyclists, families with bakfiets etc) - so speeds can certainly be lower. What's more, you also have a lot more people cycling and progress is not as rapid. However, if you get out on LF-routes speeds are much higher ,and generally, average speeds are comparable...

Be it cyling or driving, people in this country have an odd obsession with speed and how fast they are going. Most people I have talked to in Amsterdam don't think about speeds, but how long a journey takes.
