I am going to be in Wetherby on Friday and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good butcher in the area, somewhere with good sausages, bacon and pies.

Did someone mention pies????????????????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The place to go is Boroughbridge where you will find Greenwoods. Their pork pies and pork and apple pies are superb as is their black pudding. The butcher, John Tipping is a gent and he spent time telling me how to get my hot water pastry right and was kind enough to give me some of his pastry to establish the parameters for my own pork pie making.

If his bacon and sausages are as good as his pies and his puddings, and I have no reason to believe otherwise, Greenwoods is the place to go.

I can not recommend him highly enough.

If you can make it to Ripon there was a good butchers in the market square the pork pies with egg were particularly good.

Note of caution it is about a year since I was last in Ripon and things can change!

In Wetherby I can't recall an independent butcher, but there is a very good Bakery on the Main Street near a pub called the Swan and Talbot. You can park in the Morrisons car park behind the main street. (Don't park in the car park of the pub unless you are going in)

Update. I've just looked on Google and there is a Butcher's shop (never been in as it's always shut at the times I visit Wetherby) almost next door to the bakery which is called "The Oven Door" Google "North Street Wetherby " and use streetview for number 21 North Street.

Good luck and Good eating.

The butchers that you are referring to is probably Appletons - great pies and sausage rolls - limited on the bacon front though they do a good black pudding and haslet.

Bakeries simply don't do good pies - only desperation has me seeking piers from a bakery.

The Wetherby butchers is worth shunning in favour of Boroughbridge.

Trust me. I've done them all :hungry:

trust me Appletons will still be there. It has new owners who are pie specialists and took on the business a year ago.

Appletons pies are best eaten warm.

Heading further North you might like to call in at Darlington and sample Taylors in Skinnergate. Their pork pies, again best eaten warm, still are the bench mark against which I judge all other pork pies.

In between Ripon and Darlington lies Thirsk where, in the Market Place you can avail yourself of the products of Johnsons their pies are great and their sausages are prize winners.

Well, even more amazingly I am also gonna be in Darlington later this year - looks like I have chosen my 3 venues very well

And it looks as if my dog might be getting well fed after all the dog shows (the reason for the visits)

Is the Darlington Dog Show still in the South Park?

If so you aren't too far away from the town centre and Skinnergate where Taylors can be found.
