£15 grand is not a bad starting salary for a trainee, especially if you factor in the free accommodation and presumably meals too. I should imagine a fully qualified butler is on a reasonable wage and as the article says, an ex royal butler can command £100k in the private sector.

Writing an employment available letter to the Times is one of the few tasks one has to undertake for oneself. My butler does most things but this would just be asking for trouble and he has been with me since that damn war, and I am sure he still blames me for his digs in Mafeking, I was hoping he would dead by now.

I would think that the post of Footman is a step down from the post of Butler usually you start at the bottom as boot boy and work your way up same with the girls who start as kitchen maids and rise up to become ladies maids.
