Keep an eye out on your local papers. Our local paper, Hornsea, East Yorks has a Specialised road bike for £150 this week, but not much more info than that, so depending on model, size, condition etc it could be a good buy  SWMBO has said no though

Also bigging up Felt bikes, they are really good. Don't forget too, that if you're finding it's not quick enough, you can just switch the 37mm hybrid tyres it comes with, for some slick road tyres, say a 28mm width. Since the wheels are the same diameter as on a racer/road-bike, you should be able to get up a fairly good lick of speed that way.

if budget is an issue definitely have a look on ebay. as long as the bike is roadworthy from day one, you can always improve it when budget dictates.

plenty of good old-school racer around for two-figure sums…

+1 3 weeks ago I was in exactly the same position as you.

Limited budget
5feet 9
32 inside leg
20 mile a day commute

I managed to bag a bathing on ebay. Got a Chris boardman hybrid comp 2010 for £175

Its a 54cm frame and suits me fine. Definatly check ebay for a few days

As long as I breathe, I attack.
I use a carrera virtuoso for commuting 20 miles a day and for the price they are a cracking bike with mounts for mudgaurds and a rack , essential in my experience .I am 5 foot 7 " with a 31 " inside leg and i ride a medium ..

I know Halford`s can have a bad rep but assuming the staff are competent the bike is very good, you can always have it delivered and put it together yourself as the bike is pretty much built.
Bike Radar still reckon it is one of the best sub £300 bikes around , heres the review ...
