thanks vickster and rest of you guys but nothing there tickles my fancy. maybe if the specialised had hydraulic disc brakes I would be tempted

Sirrus Elite has disc brakes and you might get the 2013 model now in your price range

Specialized don't appear to be able to make a disc brakes sirrus with carbon forks, probably worried after their various carbon fork recalls?
