I don't think I've ever worked out my exact cost at a sit down meal, we always split it equally then add some in for the tip.

Same with the rounds, if there's 6 people or more I like to get my turn in early so I've done my duty.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose but it always averages out in the end..
Go to Belgium, sit at a table and drink loads all night, with everyone drinking at varying paces.

At the end of the night, even if you're in a big group, and swap tables, the waiter will remember exactly what everyone asked for and split the bill accordingly.

And the more pissed you get, the more logical it becomes.
Same as Copenhagen and Stockholm and Malmö

And Germany. They know everything those buggers. One of them dobbed me in when I sat outside all afternoon while the rest of the family skied past me. They all thought they'd just kept missing me on the slope until they rolled up and the waiter dobbed me in: No tip for him!

I remember one couple who used to come out with us single guys. As a couple only he got a round in. When it was his turn she only had a half if lager but every other round she had something like Brandy and Babycham. Sometimes he would even miss someone out of his round if they still had a bit left in their glass when he went up to the bar saying "Oh I thought you didn't want another yet". He worked in London for the DHSS and only came up to Doncaster a few times a year visiting his parents thankfully.

I don't like rounds, bill splitting or kitties. I've tried, and I've always been happy to put in more than my share to avoid awkwardness, arguments, embarrassment etc, but despite that approach there's still awkwardness, arguments and embarrassment when the total amount collected still doesn't meet the bill amount. The trouble is that there's always someone taking the p!ss and "forgetting" or disregarding some of their share. Often it's more than one person as well.

One ex colleague of mine would always volunteer to mind the kitty, and then he'd buy himself packets of fags and food dishes to have sneakily on the side. I'd have put in 20 quid, had two beers, and he'd be going "Erm, sorry chaps, the kitty is looking depleted, can you all put another 20 in?" Chancer.

II find it can be a bit awkward, rounds. I tend to only have one or two drinks, whereas lots of people sink three or four pints in two hours.

Rounds are a necessary evil in the grim North.

Certainly everywhere I did my formative drinking we would do it on a pub crawl....one drink per pub then move on. So all in the group have to drink at roughly the same pace. So you can't just nurse a drink quietly and let others get on with it

There was one guy in our village who was probably the tightest man in the world. He had the nickname Toucan. If he went to a party he would take two cans and walk in. He would make his way to the kitchen and when no one was looking put his cans outside, drink the hosts drink all night then collect his cans and take them home.

If people knew, why did someone then not go outside and drink them instead, before feigning innocence about what happened to them!
