Cable ties...

....how did we ever survive without them!

I've just added two to my winter bike to hold together my failing rear mudguard. In fact having them in place has not just held off the inevitable, it actually feels sturdier than it was when new!

So how many of you have any cable ties on your bikes and what are they doing?

Nearly every bike will have some, I reckon. Isn't every cycle computer nowadays attached by cable ties alone (in the good old days there used to be screwed clamps)? And I think cycle lamps are going the same way...

To my mind, they are the work of the devil . True, there are some types which you can undo and re-use - we use those at work. But for cycling bits'n'pieces, the ones you get thrown in the packet - well, bring on the 'throwaway' society...

13.

5 on the front mudguard (it's supposed to stay put without help, but I just couldn't get the expanding bung-thing to grip the frame enough - 2 thin ties that I worried about and augmented with 3 really nce chunky ones)

4 holding the computer wire from flapping about in various places.

4 as failsafes stopping various lights (mainly Cateyes) coming adrift from their mountings.

I don't actually have any on my bike now, my computer is held in by 'o' rings.

on my vintage claud butler: two cable ties have replaced a chainring bolt (for now)
winter fixie: cable ties used to fix lights on and stop them rattling
winter bike: as above, plus tiny ones holding the front mudguard on
summer bike: cable ties keep the saddle clip for the removable saddle pack firmly on the saddle rails

having had a multiple chainring bolt (2 out of 3) failure on the claud 40 miles from home, and been rescued by cable ties a clubmate carried in his saddle bag, i now keep them in my saddle bags, just in case.

Apart from the computer cable ties, I have one holding my rear mudguard to the seat stay bridge, after the original metal fixing snapped. About 3 years ago now, really must get it off and replace the metal bit. (it's not the same cable tie, they wear through, I've replaced them several times)
