Took bikes to France this year on holiday. Me, WIfe, and 2 boys (14 & 12). We all noticed that the drivers were much more considerate, and in the end we cycled a bit more than I thought we would.
Where-ever you choose I'm sure your have a great time.

I'm already turning my mind to next years holiday and fancy going to France for a couple of weeks

Other than going to Paris and kayaking in the alps I've not really been.

Can you suggest some nice regions that I might try? Mrs Dave will be cycling too, so the alps probably isn't a goer

You will get lots of recommendations to standard touristy areas, many of which are great and i would not want to knock them. But our best times in france have been in "France profonde" those timeless places miles away from the tourist hot spots.

One of the very best was in the Franche-Comte area around Besancon, on a Headwater cycling holiday when the girls were around 14 and 9. Lots of easy paced cycling with no real hills. We hardly saw a car all week and did not hear another English voice.

They no longer do the holiday we did but have two in the area that will give you some ideas

Fixed wheel fanatic.
Most of Provence away from the coast is rather lovely. I'm a big fan of the Vaucluse, the area around Mt Ventoux.
I spent a weekend in Aubignan (to ride Ventoux with friends), just north of Carpentras. It was superb, beautiful cycling weather, respectful driving when you see a car on the quiet roads, fab people and food. I'm planning to return with my other half next year.

I'm liking the sound of this area.....
