... and it looks great, why have I not been here before? Have been pedalling for 25 years plus, so why isn't it getting any easier? I'm from a mainly touring background and am aiming to do the obvious this year - cycle to Yorkshire for the Grand Depart in July. The twist is that I have talked a friend into it who hasn't got that many miles under his belt so I think a tandem would be the obvious choice. So, can anyone advise what size frame I should be looking for? The front (Captain, right?) is 6'1" and the back (Stoker?) is 5'7". Many thanks and I look forward to contributing. Norbert.

Hi Norbert and welcome I also can offer no advice on a tandem but as to why is it not getting easier ! it never doe's all you do is get "FASTER" and use higher gears well thats what someone on here told me some time ago and I will now totaly agree with that lol.So i do hope you find the info you need and all goe's well on your ride in July.

Shouldn't actually be too difficult, many of our friends ride [and race] tandems, with the heights you quote you could easily get away with a medium front and small rear, or in old money 21" and 17".

Does the sizing work differently on tandems for some reason? I am 6' 1" and ride 58 cm bikes, or approximately 23". I once owned a 60 cm bike which was ok once I replaced its 11 cm stem with a 9 cm one. The last 22" bike I rode felt a bit small, so I would imagine that 21" would feel way too small, unless a very long stem were fitted.

Yes it does a bit in the sense that finding tandems with very large front v small rear are unusual and will generally only be bespoke or so my friends tell me. I was at one time looking at one for dr_pink and myself to race on and couldn't find the equivalent size we would normally ride. There are a range of sizes but the top tube length is the critical one with any further adjustments being made via seatposts and stems etc.
