Campag Record threaded headset

I just found this forum and start straight off with a question, sorry.

I have a Donahue frameset, which is about 14 years old, and it was fitted with a miche headset which has died. The fork is a 1 inch threaded cro-mo job and OK. I decided I wanted to keep everything Campag, as the rest of the kit is Campag Mirage, so bought a 1" threaded record headset. When my bike mechanic tried fitting it he said the stack height of the new headset was too high. Eventually we found a fix using a locknut from a stronglight headset, not pretty but at least I have the campag races etc. However on investigation I see a gap between the upper cup and the top screw down race the gap is about 1mm or maybe less. I realise the terminology maybe wrong (sorry)

I assume this can't be right?

Any suggestions welcome

It's possible that the bearing cartridge is the wrong way up, but the Cane Creek S3 is like this even when assembled correctly.

Sorted, I called the bike shop that fitted it and they agreed it didn't seem right, took it back and they had another look and found that they had not fitted a seal. So with the seal fitted everything looks fine.

Now to get some more miles in.
