I had to take the shifter off to remove a cable ball end I threaded through incorrectly and it got stuck...I re assembled the shifter...and it doesnt click on the thumb shifter...ok on the lever though. I did unscrew the round plate inside the shifter...saw a spring then backed off and screwed the plate back in asap.

Any thoughts ?? (other than why the f did you do that lol!)

Thanks

Now the fun begins! Just joking - should be an easy fix^_^

You have probably unseated the spring.

What design of shifter are we talking about QS(Quick shift) or the traditional sort.

You need to unscrew the bolt holding the shiny round bit.

Then lift the round bit off.

That exposes a round drum with a spring around a central raised bit.

The spring should be located in a slot in the central raised bit and the outside of the spring has an L shaped end which goes into a hole in the outer casing of the lever.

Have a look at what has happened and if either have come loose

What should happen is that when you press the thumb shifter it moves against that drum. Whenyou release the thumb shifter it allows the drum to move one turn.

Give it a go and see if the drum moves.

Ok...when i pull the lever it clicks and moves several times...when i push the thumb thingy it clicks and moves but only once..I am keeping the cable tight when doing that with my hands..I have re fitted the disc and can see it turn as i click. The issue is that i can move fine across the cogs with thelever...but the thumb switch only allows me to shift once.

I have seen some models that need the pull of the spring on the mech to work properly.

Can you thread some cable through as per normal and then tie a weight to the end (to simulate the pull from the mech). Then try the clicks with the thumb.

..couldnt do that...but I reconnected everything and used the tension from the mech ...still no joy...what happens is that when I use the lever to click it moves the mech but doesnt return to the central position after each click..looking at the lever after each click its stuck out to the left each time and i have to move it back to the central position with my fingers...the thumb clicks once and moves across one cog...but nothing more.

Its a new cable...I checked how its connected/run through all the right holes etc ( ithink). The shifter was fine before I took it apart..so its my fault...but ..nothing has snapped etc...so it has to be that im not putting it back together correctly.

Its a clarkes ready lubed gear cable...going through the same campag casing that the old cable went through.

:banghead:^_^

It sounds like the bolt at the lever end has shifted (the bolt you have undone screws into this) - unfortunately you have to take the lever off to get to this.

If you have an LBS that can look at it I would get them to do it.

Ok...well I kept going...oiled the shifter spring and all the gubbins...put it all back together again and set up the derailer etc...the shifter works!...got it moving th echain across both ways...still need to set the limit screws and the cable tension but its late and ill do that tomorrow. It still jumps one cog as before all this though...but at least im back where i started and ive learnt a lot in the process...like why a bike shop costs so much

Glad to hear it - phew!

Two things - I keep the underside of that shiny metal circle well greased/oiled. Also you may have noticed some blue gunge on the screw - this is threadlock and on some models is important in that it stops it unscrewing in use. When you have a spare moment apply a new dab, tighten up and then back off very slightly so as to keep things free.
