Could I exchange the FSA chain set on my otherwise Ultegra for a Campag chain set - Merlin have some nice prices at the moment and I am tempted but not if I shall be forever grinding.

Nope. Why not just get an Ultegra chainset?

The Campag chainset will need a compatible bb, since even the square taper standards are different. The chainset will work fine with an otherwise Shimano setup. I've done this myself on a couple of bikes and my good bike currently has an Ultegra chainset running with a Campag mechs and shifters, so the other way round will work too.

I wouldn't touch any of the Campag PowerTorque chainsets. From a maintenance point of view, it is a crap design that requires a special puller to remove the LH crank and the bearings. The Park tools for that will set you back £100+. (It is the only part on my Campag groupset that I don't like.)
