Just a quick note - I switched to Campag's external bearings based bottom bracket system at the start of the year. Despite misgivings about the Hirth joint I have found it to be both reliable and far more efficient than the previous B/B systems I have used.

How can you tell? Unless a BB is buggered then even a cheap one will feel smooth enough that you'll never be able to measure efficiency without instruments.
