cycling to work yesterday afternoon (back shift)i felt a few rough noises from the freehub (campag mirage) and wheen freewheeling it was not to keen to reengage and would just spin. got to work and had a look during lunch break and after a few spins and a spray of wd40 we had total failure won't engage, had to get the wife to come get me at stopping time. now i have been looking and can't find a replacement rear hub anywhere except for an exspensive record hub, anybody know where i can get a replacement 9 speed campy rear hub. ps first time i've had to phone the cavilry

No need to replace the hub. It just sounds like the pawls have went in the freehub. The joy of Campag is that it's user servicable.

http://www.campagnolo.com/repository/documenti/en/spares02_B.pdf go to page 14 for the Mirage hub. It lists the part numbers and you can search for these in google and buy online.

It's quite possible that a simple strip, clean and re-grease will get the hub working again. If it's an older hub that's not been stripped down for a while, the grease round the pawls could have become sticky, preventing the pawls from moving freely.

I've done this on an older Mirage hub and it's not difficult - the tricky bit is getting it back together while keeping the pawls in place.

Yes, that can be awkward.

One way to solve this is to wrap some dental floss (or fishing line would work) around the pawls to hold them in place. Then slide the axle back into the hub but before the axle is all the way in, pull the dental floss out and then slide the axle the rest of the way in.

thanks for the replies, took the wheel to my LBS 3 new springs and all is now well. for future reference does anyone know where i can get instructions on how to strip the hub down.

I've had this happen three times on Campy hubs - different hub on each occasion and two of them were under warranty. I was beginning to wonder whether this was an inherent design fault in the hubs. The third one, I didn't bother to get it fixed as the rim was rather worn too, I just scrapped the wheel (it's almost as cheap to buy a wheel anyway). But the hub ought to have had plenty more miles in it, really.

Not nice to lose your entire drivetrain, maybe miles from home...

Next time I upgrade the lot (and you have to do it all at once, compatibility issues ), I'll be going somewhere other than Campag - for the hub/cassette at any rate.

I've had it happen to me with a Shimano freehub and it cost £40 to replace the freehub. At least with the Campag hubs they can be fixed for a few pounds.
