On the outskirts of Warrington is a 'toll road/bridge' over the ship canal.
For as long as I can remember the single crossing price has been 2 pence.**
The owners (Peel Holdings) have just put it up to ONE POUND  .
I accept that it had to go up but by such a big % ???.
**I have never purchased a return ticket but from memory that used to cost 7P (you could use it as often as you wish on the same day.

Google tells me that is a 4900% rise.
Edit....
I have been told it used to be 7P not 2P, Soz

Why did it stay at 2p for however many years before this increase?

Are there viable alternative crossing points that aren't toll roads, or toll roads that were more expensive that they were hoping would regularly use their cheaper one instead?

Wait till you note that it's ANPR operated and you've got to go on line to pay it. Very easy to forget. I nearly forgot when using the Imperial War Museum's car park. The machine on site was broken. I only remembered a few hours after getting home.

To my knowledge there is not what you call a viable alternative route.
When I used to cycle out that way eg to Dunham Massey I would use the bridge on the way out but come back via Lymn thereby missing the bridge out but it adds a lit of miles (depending where you are headed).

I can't believe that anything/service these days would be 7p! It would cost more to administrate than the total collected. I'm guessing there is an age old covenant that says it should be no more than 7d or something?! Anyway, a quid for a crossing is not too bad. When I first used to use the Tamar bridge from Cornwall into Devon, it was £1. It is now £2.50 (or £2 with a tag) IIRC. Maintenance costs go up, as does labour, so I'm not really apposed to it (but I would be if I had to use it every day)

The residents' only parking in my area.

A visitors' parking permit for my street used to cost £1 for 40 parking slots... and that used to last me a good 3 years.
Then the county council decided to launch the annual visitor parking permit; unlimited parking slots for £35 a year... which is a fair hike from around 30p a year. I didn't buy one.

Actually it was 12p according to the Warrington local newspapers, which makes it only a 733.33% increase if my maths are correct.

Although given this is the first price rise in 161 years, that makes for a slightly more reasonable annual inflation rate of about 1.325%.

The Blackwall tunnel went from £0.00 to £4.00 this year. After being free since it was built over 100 years ago.

Now that’s a total rip off.

Mrs D is diabetic and keeps a pack of Tesco branded energy tabs in her handbag for emergencies.

They've recently gone from £1 to £2 without explanation or justification and diabetics adross the natikn are pretty pitched off about it.

We've just built another tunnel that you don't want to use. We're charging for that so we thought we'd start charging for this one too.

If it's the quickest route away from Warrington, then a pound is worth every penny.

Only kidding, I've never been to Warrington, though a close family friend once went (back in the 80's) to see Hull FC play Warrington and all he would tell us was they chucked potatoes with nails in them, at the Hull fans.
