Can I eat them?

The picture looks as though the fungi is growing in woodland. I was all ways advised to be very wary of picking any fungi growing in woodland.

Especially coconut groves. Horrifically dangerous.

Without a helmet that is.

Puffballs are fairly easy. Cut open and if white: ok. If yellow: wrong species. Confused sometimes with earth balls which aren't edible.

But don't take my advice alone. Learn, study, experience etc.

I remember watching a Ray Mears episode years back, he had a guest forager on who was an expert in fungi.

Next the expert recalled the tale of miss identifying some mushrooms his University students had found and he'd eaten.

He managed to write the name of the potentially deadly mushroom on his forehead before blacking out and waking up in hospital.

If that's what happens to an expert sod picking them in the wild..

The thing that would put me off eating any wild fungi is the number of beasties that crawl out of them.

Liberty Caps.
A field I used to fly model aircraft from, in Warwickshire, was known nationally as a prime spot for them. Regularly used to come across guys leaving the field with one or two carrier bags of them.

The only wild mushroom I'd dare to pick for the table are the giant puffballs as you can't mistake them for anything else. You do need to catch them when they're small and firm though (about the size of a canteloupe melon) else they're not very nice.

Best peeled, thickly sliced and fried in garlic butter, though tbh they're not really worth the effort.

Have them growing in my garden and do pick the odd one for a laugh.

Here's another one you can't mistake for anything else - the Shaggy Ink Cap.
Best picked young before they open out. Very nice raw in a salad.

Ah, yes, those... Used to have loads of them in the garden, but haven't seen any in a couple of years. Didn't realise they were edible.
