Saw these growing on the lawn outside my son's uni hall of residence when I dropped him off last week. Anyone any idea what they are? It's a huge cluster, about a foot across...

They look like a type of multi zoned polypore.
They are usually edible, but not eatable. ie. They probably won't poison you but they taste s**t.
