Can one get snow chains for bikes?

I have not been out riding because of the snow but I'm quite tempted to have a go

If the did snow chains for bikes I think I would go and buy some right now


Watching tv from other countries I noticed that drivers here expect too much of the council..... in other countries everybody uses snow chains to help themselves move along..... here people blame the council, the MP's, the PM, the Pope, and the Bible lol

You might think this only happens in the Scandinavian countries (they are well prepared there, even pedestrians put something like metal spikes on their shoes) but in Spain and Italy people use snow chains too.

Does anyone know if you can get snow chains for bikes anywhere at all?

Don't think so, the first thing that springs to mind is clearance between tyre and forks/chainstays and also problems with rim brakes. I could be wrong though ...

You can certainly get studded and spiked tyres though. They give you good grip on ice, but you'll still slide a fair bit in powder snow. Also, you still have to take it dead careful round corners!

Thanks for that link.... I didn't know about those tyres!! I wonder how effective they are though.

Yeah I did think about some of those things that may prevent snow chains. You would definitely need disc brakes as I don't think you could fasten the chain and use rim brakes. clearance is another issue that can be overcome with narrower tyres and thinner chains.

If you wrap old pairs of tights around the tyre and rim, tying off on the rim side. You will find that you will have superb traction!
