Can you take photos?

The wife's got a whizzo camera that frankly scares the crap out of me. I don't have a clue where to start, I really don't. My own digital camera has a few clever settings but I always leave it in 'point and shoot' mode... not that I ever use it! Thinking back, I've just never ever been one to take photos. I don't know why, it just never occurs or appeals to me.

Please tell me I'm not the only one!

I take most of the photos, mainly holidays, with a cheapo digital which is a shame because my narcissistic side wants to be in them

The self-timer gets used occasionally!

I use a cheapo £160 Canon digital (Powershot or something), which I bought a few months ago, having not taken a photograph in decades.

Well, all I can say is that "Mr Auto" does a blooming impressive job. The 102 page manual is a bit daunting.....

I enjoy taking pictures, just havn't had much time this year. I have a slightly old Canon DSLR and it suits my purposes, my little Canon compact has packed up and needs replacing.

Don't worry about the menu's if you don't want to - if it's a half decent camera just leave it on full auto and the quality should be fairly acceptable. Just get the composition right, and you will see a big improvement. Use the rule of thirds, imagine line's at 1/3rd and 2/3rd intervals, both horizontal and vertical, aim so the point of interest is on one of those lines (horizon shots?) or at one of the intersections (a tree?) and it will look slightly better than being bang in the middle. It's not always the best, but can be a useful method. Also, avoid using digital zoom - optical zoom is fine.

I like it, but don't get chance these days, as the hours I work mean I can't process stuff.

(At one time I developed my own black and white film - fat chance of that happening again).

"Auto" on most compacts will make a good fist of things, imo - just watch out for odd light (lots of difference between light and shade, sun behind your subject, etc etc)

It's not the camera. I'd be quite capable of using it, I'm sure, IF I had any interest. I simply have never liked taking photos. Not that I dislike it, I just never think of doing it. I'm sure there are plenty of folk like me.... aren't there?

Fair enough - if you don't enjoy - don't do it. I think pictures are magical though - I love looking at really old family photo's, especially the crap ones, they give you an insight like nothing else really, so if not for yourself, for others.
