Canaletto and Bridget Riley

I'm going to the National Gallery this weekend to see the Canaletto exhibition - and I also like the look of the Bridget Riley one.

I know it's an improbable question, but has anyone been?

Are they good?

Just goes to show how my mind is pre-set for consumerism and TV.

At first glance I thought you were talking about the ice cream and the
rather large young lady, pre Harry Hill on Y.B.F.

mangaman - excellent! I don't know about the Bridget Riley one - it is her 'recent works'...which may or may not be evocative of her previous op art efforts...I remember staring at one of her lined, shaped, harshly coloured paintings for ages (possibly at the Hayward) and of course, the after-images dancing around on walls etc kept me amused. (took a liking to Ad Reinhardt, Pol Bury and Mary Martin after that!)
Canaletto was discussed on a Sunday ride - as we viewed the Thames at Greenwich (although it was a bit murky, not golden sunlight ) I'm sure the exhibition will be great viewing (and you can always pop round the corner to the NPG and spend 1/2 hour in the 20thC gallery before nipping downstairs to their reasonable coffee bar ). Have fun!

Bridget Riley! Bridget Riley! The Anish Kapoor of her day! (And that was a long time ago).

I'm prejudiced - a friend worked for her for a pittance for years, painting the paintings. Yup - you read that right.

Raphael keeled over at 37 yrs of age - it was womanising wot did it . But he had about 50 peeps trailing around working for him apparently. I would have been happy to paint a stripe for Bridget, wryly, and polish metal for Amish Koppoo-er.

I'm going, with the wife, on Sunday morning - and to the Gaugin exhibition at the Tate Modern on Saturday morning so hoping both are as good as the reviews say they are.

We'll certainly take a look at the Bridget Riley exhibition, and probably the Rosa Barba installation at the Tate Modern (it's the last day). Somehow thousands of ceramic sunflower seeds don't appeal much though.....

Unfortunately mangaman I wouldn't know if you were there at the same time or not - the wonders of web forums!

I imagine that's common practice as you say.

Also I saw an amazing piece of art by Anish Kapoor that blew my mind. A surface so polished you entered it and the reflections were truly amazing. I still remember it and it still means something to me nearly 10 years later. That is the joy, for me, of art - I find it occasionally life-changing.

Hi David - I'll only be there on the Saturday.

The Gaugin one I haven't looked into - I'll be meeting a friend Saturday am in Borough market, so just a few steps to the Tate Modern.

I confess - I'm not a massive fan of Gaugin - but these things are always better when properly curated. I may try to pop in on Saturday am. I agree about the Rosa Barba installation. Not for me.

If you see a ferociously handsome fellow with an A-list celeb by his side in the Tate on Sat am - ignore them. it won't be me.

If I'm there, I'll be the grey haired, quiet chap who you'll probably miss

Check out the Menier Chocolate Factory for somewhere to eat...been once and think it was quite nice Also, at the Tate Modern, take a trip to the bar on the 7th floor, for a most agreeable view of London...anaesthetic for the cost of a bottle of grog at Tate M prices! Fullers 1845 was a tricky negotiation I think...but they have - I'll look it up: Here. Much easier than explaining! Have fun!

I'm a masive Borough Market fan but live too far to go regularly.

This Saturday my plan is Borough market / a nice lunch / National Gallery / a meal somewhere on the South Bank

Tate Modern I hope to add (it depends on what my chum for the day/the weather provides)

Thanks for another great tip - the 7th floor bar at Tate Modern. As a yokel from the wilds of Sussex we get excited by an empty beach.
