Sirrus is the 'go to' choice, and a nice bike.

That's worth a look

That's a nice one from Cannondale

The Hybrids need a bit more effort to get round on, but not everyone gets on with road bikes, so Hybrids are a good option to have. Hybrids and mountain bikes are the only bikes I'd recommend hydraulic disc brakes for as well. My personal preference is for front suspension with lock out function, for smoother tarmac type rides as well.

Go to Evans, have a few test rides (just need photo ID and bank card). Decide for yourself not on reviews.

Doesn't sound like you need suspension, so look at rigid forks. Suspension just adds weight and might not be the best in that price range

Decathlon also have a couple of well priced flat bar roadbikes in your price range

Why don't you feel safe on the roadbike? Braking (you can add cross lever brakes on the bars)? Tyre width (you might be able to fit fatter ones)? Riding position (spacers/flipped stem might help)?

Hello Northernlegs and welcome to the site.
Any of the recommendations are fine but avoid the suspension forks, as has been said you don't need them. Pick one with disc brakes for more secure stopping in all weathers, hydraulic or disc, both work well.

Prefer the flat handlebars and feel more upright and safe plus find the wheels/tyres to skinny again not feeling totally comfortable!!!
