Finally got round to trying BartsPE. Got as far as the ISO, but can't get it to run on a USB stick (apparently it's possible, but only by, among other things, downloading the (300+Mb) Win2003 service pack 1). *sigh*

How about trying to install XP from an external USB CD-ROM?

That's astonishingly sweet of you but I wouldn't dream...


Nope, not solved yet...but not given up neither. A friend has promised me that he is preparing a boot stick with just Grub on it, and assures me that this will be my liberation from frustration and access to installation. We shall see...
