I thought that was the sin. But then I wondered if you were going slowly, because you can cross the solid white to overtake parked cars, pass cyclists and horses etc.

If you were going quickly then the greatest sin was committed by the driving instruction car whether it was driven by the instructor or learner under instruction. As nobody mentioned this I thought maybe there was another transgression I'd missed.

HC rule 129

"Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.

[Laws RTA 1988 sect 36 & TSRGD regs 10 & 26]"

I have a sneaking suspicion that BM may have been travelling a tad faster than 10mph;)

So possibly worth a letter to the local rag to embarrass the errant driving instructor...

He overtook on the opposite side of the road immediately before the road bent to the right and went downhill. Therefore he was hidden from oncoming traffic by the inside of the bend and couldn't have seen if it was safe.

edit - stop the video at 15 seconds and the 'summit' of the road is just ahead of the driving school car then stop again at 18 seconds when the third vehicle is overtaking and see how much road is visible ahead
