Despite being an insurance sceptic for most things, other than house, and legally-required (car), breakdown cover is really about saving hassle - which I consider worth the money. In the past I used to just carry tools, confident I could fix things, but now just can't be arsed, and anyway, cars are virtually unfixable these days.

We're in a very similar situation to you - one well-maintained VW, so 'just in case' cover. We've been with First Call for a decade or so - £42.50 a year. The three times we've needed help, they've arrived promptly & been very helpful.

Thats why I found a cheaper provider I feel £30.00 is a good trade off between peace of mind and having something thats never used. A breakdown on motorway would certainly cost more than a £100 for recovery.

And... I've got a car with Renault engine its been fine..... but a 5 year old Kangoo I had with same type engine broke down at least 6 times within the 3 month warranty period... I traded it back to them within 6 months.

If I had a Renault then I would go for the cover^_^

I have home start recovery with green flag..i used it once and very efficient.
the mechanic however was far from it....told me my imobilizer had failed and van needed to be towed..

i googled the fault as i thought it was maybe a fuse and hey presto a RCD switch behind the battery needed resetting..but they did turn up in 35mins.

ive just renewed my van insurance with Dial Direct and got RAC cover windscreen and courtesy van for 208 quid fully comp.
hastings were 174 for windscreen and courtsey van..usually 100 quid touch for breakdown with my van

I upgraded my bank account and then got AA membership, mobile phone insurance, travel cover etc all through my bank account. It was the most economical way for me to do it.
I was going to say the same thing, Halifax ultimate reward account comes with car breakdown as a standard feature and it offers and delivers better cover (Inc home start) than the cover provided with my car Insurance.

I have personal membership with the RAC, and so does the wife. Covers the person in any vehicle whether driver or passenger. It is a bit dearer than just covering a specific car, but when its needed its needed. The RAC have been excellent on the occasions i have had to use them. Fortunately since we got shot of the Renault Megane i haven't had to call on their services (5 years), but when she had the Megane we were on first name terms with all the local RAC patrols.

Cheers.............Howard
