I had my Capri insurance with the same company for 5 years and at £220 a year I was quite happy. Then when the dozy cow smashed into the back of it I transfered the cover over to my £150 Skoda.

Just had the renewal through £755!

Went onto Go Compere and got the same cover for £197. even the original company's quote was £300 less!

I ALWAYS ring around every year before renewing car insurance. It really bugs me when the company I am already with tries to stiff me by quoting me something much more expensive than I would be offered as a new customer. They generally do give me that deal if I ask, but it annoys me that I have to ask.

No loyalty to insurance companies...

I've also found that I can use those comparison websites to find the cheapest offers, but can often get something even cheaper if I phone up one of those cheap companies direct for a quote.

Snap, I had a renewal for my Avensis a few weeks ago and noted an increase by about £75 to £340. So, I decided to do the web search with moneysupermarket and got a good quote for £220 with a lower excess. Interestingly, the current company (AA) was at £290 - cheaper than the renewal. I had an enjoyable conversation with them accusing them of sharp practise.

Now now - no need for that RtH. It made me smile, I assure you. (That will be five pounds more than my original quote please!)

I am with direct line however always shop around (usually go compare) and will then phone DL and tell them that if they want to keep my business they have to match the best rate found. I find it works best when there is less than a week to go before the policy expires and at the end of the day. Not failed yet.

I've had Hastings for about 3 years, last year I was going to ring around but they chased me & asked me if I was renewing. When I saie "err.... etc they reduced it by £25. As I had decided the ringing around was theoretical, I just accepted.

Ring 'em up and ask them to justify the price increase. Were they able to recover the costs of the damage to your car that the woman caused? If not then it will go down as your fault even though it wasn't ;). If they have got the claim down as non-fault for you, then if they don't restore your premium to an acceptable level, then tell them you'll leave as you've had much cheaper quotes elsewhere.

I have HastingsEssential. Their renewal was £6 cheaper so let them renew automatically as this year I couldn't be bothered to hunt for the cheapest deal as I feel I have a pretty cheap deal with them. Will do next year though, if I haven't sold the car, as I don't use it enough.
