Voice activated answering the phone is not a lot different to chatting to the person in the passenger seat ?

It’s more distracting trying to turn down
The speed of the air con fan three menus deep on the bottom left hand corner of a car touch screen. Means taking eyes off the road which answering the phone doesn’t

You can.

I use mine via Android Auto and they’re all voice controlled. For example, Google Maps won’t even let you use the keyboard while driving, accepting only voice input.
You can use voice to control your phone without the car screen device (I did for a bit - enabled Siri when in the car).

In my experience voice control is not relevant to the need for a prominent display on the dashboard as you can do the voice control without a distracting screen.

Screens/displays in cars are the norm now...fiddling with anything can be a hazard, smoking, drinking messing with your hair in the mirror ( see my Mrs for the hair example) sat nav ect....are all distractions
A touchscreen in front of you and your phone in the glovebox or cradle is no more dangerous than any of these every day examples.

And being distracted while driving, texts and phone calls are for when you aren't driving, not dealing with whilst in charge of a moving vehicle
I drive for a living and answer my phone by hands free 10/20 times a day at least. Some jobs require it.

So do I, it's not hands free that's the issue, people just can't stop themselves playing with the damn things, however fielding phone calls while driving is distracting, I prefer to tell them I'm driving, I'll call you back when I get to my next stop, no one should be expect you to answer detailed calls when driving, you really need to concentrate on the job in hand, when it goes pear shaped, it happens in milliseconds, the last thing you need is to be in conversation on a phone, because the Police will make no distinction in using hands free or not if you are involved in an incident, even if it's totally not your fault, they will view it as contributory, I use Google Maps on my work phone as a sat nav, and Apple Music on my own phone, just pick a playlist, they usually have around a 100 songs on, so I just let it play, all set up on the drive before I leave, then no need to go near it till I get to my destination

I don’t answer the phone when I’m driving. I have a preset text reply I can send that says, ‘I’m driving. I‘ll call you back when I’m free.”

Being GenX I'm probably too old to even understand why anyone needs a screen whilst they're driving, but then I enjoy listening to BBC radio 4 on Longwave, if you need music then maybe the car has bluetooth or a 3.5mm jack, you can buy bluetooth receivers on amazon that can plug into the 3.5mm jack, giving you access to music if it's lacking that function.

This argument gets used a lot. It is a lot different. When using a phone the audio quality is poorer meaning you have to listen harder. The other party also has no idea what you are facing whilst driving. There is also an imperative to exchange information quickly to wrap up the call. This takes a level of concentration away from the task at hand (ie driving).

With a passenger they are with you for the whole journey. They see what’s going on and can stay quiet as required if you’re busy doing, y’know, driving stuff. They are also right next to you and far easier to hear.

My attitude (personal so not trying to lecture others) is that driving a car involves a degree of risk, how much risk varies impacted by many factors. Massive issue is that this risk is not just risk to driver but risk to others that have no choice about or control over decisions the driver is taking.

Professional drivers, people who have been driving over many years, etc. have accumulated a lot of experience about risk and subconsciously often recognise small signs that focus their attention reducing risk. Younger less experienced drivers are still accumulating that experience. Insurance premiums highlight this difference.

Add that younger people can be more focused on their phones, sometimes placing more importance on latest Tweet for somebody they follow.

Whilst OP does not ask about this aspect, has in all probability considered it, discussed it when daughter was learning to drive, etc, there are suggestions in the question that the daughter may be a younger less experienced driver. When driving with a phone, all legal/sensible things on that phone can be achieved without prominent add-on screens ie without the added distraction eg using voice control, then I personally consider raising questions about the need and distraction risk useful, maybe if only as other many non-forum members might also be wondering and reading the thread (it's a forum open to everybody on the internet to read)

From the Open University:
"While hands-free mobile phone use by drivers is not illegal, a vast body of research has shown it is no safer than hand-held phone use."

Which is a good reason why car manufacturers shouldn't be allowed to produce cars with touch screens and menus in the first place. On my car you could find the fan switch by feel without taking your eyes of the road, try doing that with a touch screen.

You can guarantee OP's daughter mainly wants the phone connection for her music playlists. That's why my son changed his older BMW screen for an android system

Just make a playlist long enough for the trip, start it before you set off and no need for screen.

I have a few longish playlists and use bluetooth to play through my old style car radio. On the radio the left know adjusts volume and the right (normally tuning) skips next/previous track so I can tweak what's being played without taking my eyes off the road and without needing to look at or poke any screens.

Nice 2010 polo, only thing is she wants the apps and stuff from phone in the car, sadly it's only the original digital stereo...not good enough for my princess !
Has anyone tried one of these screens that plug in and I'm guessing mirror your phone?
Such as this...
10.26" Wireless Carplay Screen 360 Rotation 4K Dash Cam Carplay & Android Auto Car Stereo Car Audio Receivers with 1080p Backup Camera GPS Navigation/Mirror Link/Voice Control/Siri : Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo https://share.google/qGh23BL5TAKLmwtUA
We had a circa 2010 polo. I was able to buy a double din Kenwood radio which allowed apple car play. I dont know if they still do them, but there are some double din aftermarket radios available. They are usually straight forward to swap. The connectors are standardised for power and speakers. Most radios come with extra connectors if yours are different
