For longer trips, like french holidays, I always put the bike in the roof box. The roof box doesn't hammer the fuel consumption to the same extent as a roof mounted bike carrier and it's a lot more secure if stopping en route.
The whole bike fits in the roof box but the wheels and seatpost have to be removed and placed on top of the frame. It fits better, with more room for other stuff, if the pedals are removed as well. Protect any delicate / carbon bits with pipe insulation or an old carry mat.

I do the opposite. The bike goes in the car (there's only 2 of us so it fits nicely with the back seats dropped) and the luggage goes in the roofbox. Unless it's only a couple of cases in which case they sit under the bike.
Thanks for that, so it is possible and it is worth me looking into the idea further - I don't mind dismantling the bike and reassembling it if I am going somewhere for a week, and since I would be likely going in the winter months I would rather the bike was not on the roof getting pressure washed with road salt at 70mph.

What type of box to you have and what size is it ?
I don't know the actual size but it is low enough that on the Focus it didn't incur an extra charge on ferries and was still big enough for this lot (photo taken so I knew when reloading where everything went.) This was taken on loading up prior to a camping holiday touring Denmark. Contents include one medium suitcase, two sleeping bags, double duvet, double airbed, foot pump, 2x single airbeds, two camping chairs, camping table, wiindbreak.

A more recent photo - it's probably empty in this pic but had carried my dismantled Sirrus and the wheels from Mrs Celine's bike, her frame was in the back of the car with the rest of the luggage. There is plenty of room for goodies in the roofbox even when there's a bike in there.

I don't know if Autoform are still in business, their roof boxes were never very common but this made it easy to spot in a busy car park. On holiday with a wife and two teenage daughters whichever of them spotted it first would sing Ohhhhh Autoform, Autoform for you......
