I always clean my car / van by hand. Cheaper and if you wash it in the rain, saves on water.
I can't believe how expensive the car washes are, plus I'm convined the roller ones don't clean your car as well. Tesco have started doing offering a service where they hand clean your car for £6. I mean, that's awfully expensive if you ask me.

why does the cleanliness of your car matter to them? are you a valet company?

Er... are you serious? You would expect me to collect overseas visitors from the station or the airport in a filthy car? It's called professionalism and pride.

that's not what you said, you said they turned up unannounced. Where I come from that means they turn up at your business.

If you have to pick 'em up thats a different matter

think the car has been washed twice since it was purchased last September. hoovered out once. last wash and first hoover both happened last week - now the green car acts as a mirror and hides in the countryside again... previously it was covered in brown mud on a green background and did a really good impression of DPM... spend out lives with the lights on either way, just to get seen.

I like to hand wash mine on the street outside my house, just so that I can hear, yet again, the witty remarks from passers-by.
The top 3 rib ticklers are: at #3..... "You've missed a bit". #2 .... "There's another one round at my house when you've finished that one", and at #1, the hilarious "You'll bring the rain on!"

One of the many advantages of owning an older van is that one can give it a quick once over with a hose pipe and a broom. Fast and effective.

Well by pure chance (I was struggling to see out the side windows) mine got a hoover and wash today (first time in over 2 years).
I can't use the automated ones, as they get stuck on the roof bars, front hitch, and rear hitch. Poor bloke got bored reseting the machine (years ago I admit) so refunded me and sent me on my way.

I tried the automated purely for speed (didn't work).

p.s. bike gets cleaned much more often!

I get a bit carried away...with the right car.
Previously had a Vectra SRI, i loved that car and was quite scrupulous with it..i love the look of a clean car, i hate paying someone else to do it.
Then i got a Focus...hated the bloody thing and guess what ?...i hardly ever washed it
Just got a 2010 Astra SRI, love it...and never washed a car so often...maybe twice a week when its been wet and mucky out there.
Washed it Friday evening, polished it saturday morning...got bored sunday afternoon...and polished it again

Thinking back...i really dont think i've EVER paid to have a car washed by someone else or a machine...EVER.

Once or twice a week by hand, just as well because on Friday when I did it I noticed a small car park type dent in the wing, this is not something that should be seen by somebody who does Paintless Dent Removal for a living.

Hand car washing at the supermarkets, well can be all sorts of things going on there. The bucket and sponge guys can move the dirt about over the surface causing lots of small scratches, the jet wash style guys use TFR not good at all if you have a newish car and gave the garage a big bonus by paying for paint protection as TFR is what we in the trade use to remove the protection prior to painting.

The huge roller things well to be honest there have been times and in fact there was today when somebody paid me very good money to machine polish the scratches out, a service I must add that I do only for one very good main dealer.

All my cars are washed at home .... If i don't have time or the weather is really bad, they stay dirty.
I get weird looks from passers by when i'm out washing the cars in the rain. They don't understand it saves me having to chamois dry all three.
Top 3 remarks
3. You can come do mine after
2. You missed a bit
And no 1 . The paint will come off,you wash it so often!!!

A neighbour of mine used to keep his new car scrupulously clean, washing and polishing regularly, and became a bit annoyed after a year when he noticed some irregularity in the paint finish.
He had polished through the top coat and was getting down to the base coats or primer:rolleyes:
