Reet, well i've looked online, a renault megane scenic dynamique 1.4 with 38k on the clock goes for £4,995 used.
in fact thats what price our car was when we bought it 4 days after christmas, except we got the new year deals in early and got it for 3995
so we're going to hold out for a like for like. we really liked that car, it was our second one (we had a micra) the bootspace was brill. the little draws and hidey holes were fantastic for us and the kids. the kids even named it "yoshi"
we've gleaned from the insurers that not only was the back stoved in (the boot) but the underside was also cracked and crumpled, the spare wheel well etc. hence i guess the write off.
funnily enough the car that hit us was a VW golf and the only damage she suffered was that one screw popped out her licence plate and one of her front grills popped out.
german vs french, the french always loose (except in napoleons time i guess)
