Recently had some light fingered unspeakably not nice 'person' swipe my much loved Eddy Merckx AMX-1 from my shed (along with all my accessories and cheapish mountain bike). My question is, as I felt so at home on this bike, do I go straight upgrade to EMX-1 or should I look elsewhere, and if so where?

Sorry for your loss. Bike thieves are amongst the lowest order of villains.
I know a chap who has an EMX-1, it's a lovely frame, but it's not got the best spec for that sort of money. If you don't mind upgrading, either at first or over time, I'd say it's worth it. If not, you can get more bike for your buck elsewhere.
