Hi All,

New to the road cycling scene, and just upgraded my bike. I have also got a garmin edge 200, is there a way to get turn by turn notifications without paying an extra monthly subscription to another website?

Secondly, are there any good cycle routes round cardiff that people recommend? I like cycling on the road, and was wondering if there are any groups that go out for a ride on a weekend around cardiff and south wales? Any information would be great!

Thanks in advance!

Yes there is - depending upon what you use to create your routes.

You need to create tcx files with course points added.

For example, https://www.plotaroute.com/ lets you configure when turns/warnings will get generated.

The course points will typically appear in the end of the file like:

Code:
<CoursePoint>
<Name>300ft:Turn</Name>
<Time>2020-09-18T00:01:45Z</Time>
<Position>
<LatitudeDegrees>52.28335038540268</LatitudeDegrees>
<LongitudeDegrees>0.12172058149931188</LongitudeDegrees>
</Position>
<PointType>Right</PointType>
<Notes>300 ft - Turn right onto Rampton Road</Notes>
</CoursePoint>

But beware - I think the Edges limit you to 200 course points.

Some route planning sites may add course points as a chargeable feature.

200s ok for basic navigation but i found when i upgraded to a second hand 800 it was so much better as you can see the map as well as following the line.
Dont get me wrong i have done century rides with a 200 altough i thought it was only a line i didnt get turn by turn directions?

You can use the free version of ridewithgps to create a route. Download the TCX file and this will have TBT instructions in it. If you want turn notification to be shown before a junction with ridewithgps you'll need basic/premium membership

I have a Garmin 500 and use the free version of RWGPS, the issue I have is that the Garmin 500 can be slow to update the breadcrumb trail - sometimes the screen will freeze/blank for a period of time. Other Garmin 500 users have reported similar issues - this may also be the case with the 200.
