Do you need a cable-knit frown to carry one of these items off?

I'm out.

I think you'll find that cardies, skinny jeans & plimsolls have been the "uniform" for young guys for the last couple of years - being older, you've just come to it late!!!!

I speak as the mother of an 18 year-old cardie, skinny jean & plimsoll wearing son - however, his dad has said that he too wants to get in on the cardie-craze, at which point the son will refuse to wear his!

you may be right - but I'm afraid I discount teenage fashions entirely (he says, wearily ploughing through a laundry basket full to bursting with Top Shop items).
Make sure your son teaches his Dad how to throw the latest shapes on the dance floor, BearPear - DadDancing comes to 2011!
dear God no!!!!!

Simon, are you becoming the Gok Wan/Trinny and Sussanah of CC? The thought fills me with utter dread!!

Cardigans have been seriously out for the last three or four years

I don't know which fashion publications you've been reading, but cardigans have been 'in' for the last two years or so. See GQ from 2009, and Esquire from the same year. From what I have seen, Fair Isle style knitwear is the thing at the moment.

I have a couple of cardigans which I find are quite versatile. You can wear them under a jacket in cold weather, or just on their own for lounging around in the house.

My Army "Woolie-Pullies", dark olive with shoulder and elbow patches are an essential part of my winter wardrobe. Under a Barbour jacket, you can survive anything.

Fashion, Bah Humbug! Any fool can be uncomfortable.

I'm a Vogue man. And not (retch) American Vogue. That Wintour woman is such a Shreck! (attack of the vapours smiley)

Gok is sweet, but that bling-ed up High Street thing doesn't do it for me, I'm afraid, and double denim is just too ghastly. Then again - maybe I envy his way with women.

Anyroadup this winter I have been doing that black on black on black thing (thankyou All Saints and Robbie Williams :girl: :girl: ), but I'm very worried about spring. The 2011 cardigans are still with black on black, but there's just too much detail - and, face it boys, if you're over seventeen and over eight stone there is no way, short of carbon fibre reinforcement, that you can stop a cardigan from going all bubblybendy at the front.

Spring catches The English Man of A Certain Age out - we end up blinking pastily at the sun - and I'd like to be ahead of the game.....

vg! - except for those of us in Scotland it's Summer when we finally emerge blinking pastily at the sun...

I remember All Creatures Great and Small on TV in the late 70s and wanted one of those Fair Isle pullovers the 'boys' wore. Unfortunately I didn't know where to buy them and fortunately I didn't, as I would have looked the oldest 18 year old in Essex!

Indeedy. TV is a terrible influence on style choices. For about 10 minutes in the 70's, I wanted a chunky Starsky & Hutch wraparound cardigan thing like Starsky wore - but then I was a teenager and didn't know any better! Luckily, I came to my senses!
