Other than that, +1 for armed forces. My niece and her husband both serve in the Royal Navy and absolutely love it.

Wherever the interest is... let it be explored... personal training, coaching etc can all be built on. Why not go abroad?? Not that scary once you know what to expect. Maybe find places and get chatting with people out there, he'll soon find it less daunting putting faces to people who can help. At that age I has little sense of failure. As the last message, yes, do EVERYTHING you can, work experience especially! I'm very happily self employed and earning good money because i've spent my working history picking up skills and experience. I threw it all into the pot when i got made redundant an i've carved out a specialised place in the market for myself. I also completely diversified and got skilled qualifications just in case this didn't work so I always have work to fall back on.
