That is really interesting - the chrome on the forks does appear to be of a lower quality than the frame. I wonder if that is the case.
Replacing the forks might be a good option, or just looking at painting them again - they were painted originally.
I think the forks were fully chromed with a transparent colour over the top section .
I have a pair of half chromed forks off a Corsa I think which has a much better finish. The insides of forks towards the crown are particularly rough .

My Cobra is on page 2, remnants of acryllichrome fade still present. Fragile finish and most people by now have removed it down to bare chrome.
