I know when I used to sing in a few choirs that all the local groups used to meet up in the hospital on Xmas Eve and walk around the wards singing. I've never experienced it from a patients perspective but they've told me it was good to hear to sound of the carols travelling along the corridors as we got closer. I presume it's still done. I don't live in Scunthorpe anymore so don't know for certain.
I used to belong to a guitar club, which sent a deputation every Christmas to the local old folks home, to sing a few carols and wish them complements of the season. The home was on 3 floors, so we would start on the ground floor, do 2 or 3 carols and then move on to the next floor.
Last time we went (the home has now closed) we emerged from the lift onto the top floor, to be met by an assembled multitude of biddies, all sitting waiting for God. One old lady took one look at us, in our Santa hats and Christmas jumpers, and said "Have you come to sing us some carols?"
Our leader smiled and said "Yes"
Whereupon the old lady looked around the group and said "F*ck off!"
Everyone's a critic.......
