As you're such a bunch of knowalls clever people, I thought I'd ask for advice on here!

I've got someone coming round today to measure up for new stair carpet. The current one wore badly at the front of the tread.
What's the best sort to go for? Is wool better than man-made?
Do you get what you pay for, largely?

Don't go for loop pile if you have a cat or kids, they will pull up the loops although I think loop pile is harder wearing than cut pile. When I carpeted my batchelor house I bought contract carpet, the sort used in offices and shops and got the same fitted right through the house. It was entirely synthetic and remarkably tough.

And yes, there's a huge variation in quality/price.

I did the same - bought mine from a company that sold carpets that had been used in exhibitions. IIRC it cost me, 20-ish years ago, about £10 - £12 to carpet the front room. The only thing was the carpets were sized, rolled up and sold on - when you get them home and layed them out there were paper coffee cups, biscuit wrappers, dog ends, etc., etc. rolled up in them. The carpet had to be positioned so a fag burn was under the sofa!

Cheap and very hard wearing, much like myself! ;)

We used a natural leaf fibre called sisal when we carpeted a room last year, really tough and hard-wearing. If it's suitable for stairs and you like that kind of thing it's worth considering.

The one Mrs rich p has her eyes on is 80% wool and is £25 psm. It sounds pricey to me but then I always say that (according to her!)

If that's a fitted price rich, it could be a lot worse.

It's not but I never win these contests anyway:biggrin:
