Basically I am looking to buy a new rear cassette for my carrera subway 1 I am not sure what year the bike was made it has a 8 speed rear sprocket. currently the chain skips on the smallest 3 rear rings. I have fitted new chain and new rear gear mech. I have ordered the removal tool and the chain whip tool, But I am unsure what type of cassette I need to order I understand there are 2 different types a free wheel or a cassette type. I will be very very grateful for advice. I also don`t understand the different types I can order some are 11 34t or 11 30t. I am looking for one that has very low gears due to living in a area with steep hills and being overweight lol.

Probably easiest if you post a photo of the freewheel/cassette with the wheel off the bike. Otherwise, assuming parts/wheels haven't been changed, what model and year is the bike?

The maximum size of freewheel/cassette you can use will be determined by the rear derailleur. Again a picture or model number would help.

Edit, I really should read the title lol

Carrera Subway use a cassette. I think 32T is the largest sprocket. You can double check by counting the teeth of the largest sprockets. Shimano or Sram will do.

8speed Shimano and Sram all fit and work the same. All 8-speed hubs use the same freewheel spline. The only differences are in the range(ratio) and progression of tooth counts. Some 8 speed cassettes (HG50/51) are made of thinner metal to fit narrow 9-speed chains; best avoided.

:hello: Hi again @Chaz32

You have a freehub rather tha a screw-on freewheel (the late, great Sheldon Brown explains the differences here: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/free-k7.html ) and as already mentioned any Shimano or Sram cassette will do.

The numbers are simply the number of teeth on the sprockets (on the rear 11 = high gearing) so if wanting the lowest possible gears the 11-34 tooth cassette would be a good one to go for.:okay: Don't know what you currently have but I'd guess at 11-32 so it would be a slight iprovement on this. The chain will need to be slightly longer for the extra couple of teeth.

Not sure about the HG50 cassettes having thinner sprockets - haven't heard that before. Got any links to the info @MichaelW2 ?

I wouldn't have a problem fitting HG50 8 speed - indeed, I just have to my best bike.^_^

I've re-checked and Shimano have "re-used" some terminology HG is now also 9 speed and disused the term IG, so the compatibility issue is an old issue, not a current one.
8 speed cassette + 8 speed chain
OR
9 speed cassette with 9 speed chain.
Personally I never use Shimano chains with a one-use pin. SRAM or KMC with a tool-free master-link are more useful.

Ok Thanks for all the help and advice sorry for slow reply. I have changed rear sprocket with a shimano 11 30t gears do not slip now. I have a clarks chain with a quick release pin. Fairly pleased with it but now I have noticed the front crack seems to be a bit notchy at times. There is no play in it. However the 2nd ring does seem to be slightly bent so may change that as well. Is it worth changing the cartridge bearing at the same time?

In the absence of other replies, can I ask what you mean by the crank being notchy? Bearings or the new chain not meshing smoothly with the old chainring? If replacing the bottom bracket cartridge you'll need to make sure you match the size of the shell (probably 68mm, British threaded) the type (probably a square taper axle) and the axle length. These are likely to be marked on the cartridge itself once it's removed.

On better quality cranksets it's possible to just replace the worn/bent ring. Cheap ones are usually welded together so the whole lot has to be replaced.

Let us know what you've got and we can advise.
