Hi guys, looking at getting my first and a very cheap road bike.

I have the option to buy a brand new Carrera Zelos limited edition for £140. With adding some decent tyres and guards i could spend around the £200 mark.

I have read a few reviews that say its an ok starter bike but generally people say the triban 3 is a better option but at this price can i pass it up???

Any general info is welcome and also about some tyres please.

Thanks

Go for it @JMP (coincidently the designation for one of my favourite Marshall amps is JMP).

Likelihood is that you will ride it for a year then upgrade to a more advanced bike, but shouldn't lose a lot of £££ when buying at that price.

As long as you enjoy your cycling, it's all that matters really.

For £140 you'll not get better. Getting your hands on a Triban would be tricky as they're currently sold out!

ETA - it's the 2014 Triban which is sold out. Next year's model is available, but double the price of the Carrerra.

I do like the look of the bike and as my budget is pretty much budgetless i was hoping people would say its good enough to start on.

As for the tyres i need to try and get something as bulletproof as i can. Speed is not a factor for me at the min just durability?

Yep, totally fine for a starter bike.

The standard tyres will almost certainly be crap. My preference is Continental Gatorskin (no punctures in over a year of commuting), but other options are available - Schwalbe Lugano are well thought of on here, as are Vittoria Rubino.

Bargain pal. Get it bought, get out on it and get hooked like most of us here then keep it as a winter bike when you upgrade.
