Hi All,

I’ve recently purchased a Carrera TDF. A Halfords bike I know but with a gift voucher going towards it made it good value for a starter. If I get into cycling I’ll upgrade!

Anyway, I’m struggling up the hills at present and I want to change the gearing on it.

The front is 52-38 with a Shimano tourney front derailleur.
The Rear is 12-26 with a Shimano Claris RD-2400 rear derailleur.
8 speed cassette currently.
Shimano ST-2400 Shifters

Is it possible to upgrade this to a 11-32 without changing any components? If so to what cassette?

Something like this?

If the above gearing is not possible, could I upgrade to 11-30?

Thanks in advance!

Matt

You'll probably need to change your jockey cage if you want to go bigger than 28t. FWIW I'm running a 38/52 with a 10sp 11-28 cassette.

As HLaB says you will need to change your rear derailleur to a med cage, about thirty quid to handle a 11-30 cassette. You might be better off changing the front rings for a better low gear range, but you will need to lower the position of changer. If you want to change to a triple you will need a new BB.
