carrots do have flowers but they're generally pulled up before they flower, and as for their orange colour we can apparently thank the dutch for this (original carrots being purple) - they bred them to be orange in the 1500s to match the colour or the house of orange (dutch royal family)

Thats the only reason they changed the colour to be orange?
I was expecting it to be something realy important.

Carrots aren't all orange. I've grown yellow, white, and purple varieties too. I heartily reccomend the varieties 'cosmic purple' and 'purple dragon' to anyone who fancies growing something a little different. 'White berlicum' is also pretty.
